Hendrick’s Gin has become a rising star in the spirits world since its launch in 1999. This popular Scottish gin is now sold in over 100 countries worldwide. But what makes Hendrick’s so special? In this Hendrick’s gin review, we’ll explore what gives this gin its signature flavour and lively personality.
Hendrick’s is produced at what is called "the Gin Palace", the Girvan Distillery, which William Grant & Sons established way back in 1886. Today, this remote Scottish distillery houses only 8 employees under the direct supervision of their master distiller Lesley Gracie, who carefully craft each batch of Hendrick’s by hand. They produce small 500-litre quantities at a time.

Hendrick’s Gin was first established in 1999 in Scotland. It is classified as a Modern London Dry Style Gin, which means it gets most of its flavour from botanicals through distillation.
This gin is distilled in two very special antique stills at the Gin Palace - the Bennett and the Carter-Head. The Bennett was built in 1860 while the Carter-Head dates back to 1948.
The double distillation process using two different antique stills gives Hendrick's its exceptionally smooth and floral flavour. It includes:
The process starts by steeping the botanicals overnight in a neutral spirit in the Bennett still in order to extract bold flavours. Botanicals like juniper, coriander seed, and citrus peels infuse flavour. The signature essences of cucumber and rose petals are also added.
The next day, the Carter-Head is used to redistribute the flavoured spirit. This still has a unique feature, namely a botanical basket at the top of its neck. As the spirit passes through, it gets delicately infused again by rose and cucumber botanicals steaming in the basket.
With a deeper understanding of how this gin is made, let's look at the finer details regarding taste, smell, and appearance.
Hendrick's Gin comes in a distinctive dark green apothecary-style bottle with an old-fashioned label illustration. The quirky, minimalist packaging reflects the gin's lively personality and rich history. Plus, it stands out on the bar shelf.
Hendrick's has a delightful floral and citrusy aroma. The rose petals lend a light perfume, while botanicals like coriander and citrus add bright, zesty notes.
Floral flavours shine through on the palate, followed by waves of cool cucumber. Hints of spice and citrus complement the smooth floral and vegetal notes. Hendrick's can help make a refreshing gin and tonic or cucumber martini.
Hendrick's Gin's price coincides with it being a premium spirit. In Singapore, a 700mL bottle retails for $85, with Paneco offering an exclusive member pricing of $79.95.
Paneco also provides free delivery in Singapore on Hendrick's orders over $99. They carry the full range of Hendrick's products, including Hendrick's Flora Adora Gin Limited Release.
While the pricing may seem high compared to mainstream gins, what you get is an exceptionally smooth and flavourful spirit, which is worth the hype for true gin aficionados. The special rose and cucumber infusions create a gin that is beautifully floral and refreshing with a complexity of flavours. Hendrick's quirky personality and branding also set it apart.
For those in Singapore looking to get their hands on Hendrick's Gin, Paneco is the site to go since their exclusive member pricing makes this lovely spirit more affordable.
Hendrick's goes best with light food fares like seafood, ceviche, salads, and soft cheeses. For cocktails, try to use less flavoured ingredients to highlight the gin like a cucumber martini, or simply use aromatic tonics to bring the fresh notes of the gin for a G&T, then garnish with cucumber to let people know that you're having Hendrick's Gin.
Standard bottle sizes in Singapore are 700ml and 1L bottle. You can, of course, get mini bottles or, better yet, visit your favourite bar and grab a nice Hendrick's and tonic served in a balloon glass.
To maximise the freshness of an opened bottle, store it refrigerated with a tight seal and replace the cork after each use. Avoid direct light and excess air exposure. Follow these storage tips and maintain the gin's signature crisp, floral taste for months or years.
