Tasting the Seas: A Review of Talisker 10 Single Malt Whisky

Bottle of Talisker 10 year single malt next to tumbler glass of whisky by the ocean

If you are looking for a whisky that captures the essence of the sea, you might want to try Talisker 10, a 10-year single malt whisky from Scotland's Isle of Skye that is known for its smoky, salty, and spicy character.

The Talisker Distillery was founded in 1830 by Hugh and Kenneth MacAskill. The distillery is located on the shores of Loch Harport, near the village of Carbost. The distillery uses water from Cnoc nan Speireag (Hawk Hill), which flows over peat and through layers of volcanic rock, giving the water a mineral-rich and slightly peaty quality, which influences the flavour of the whisky.

Key Features

  • Classification: Single malt Scotch whisky
  • Location: Isle of Skye, Scotland
  • Age: 10 years
  • Mash bill: 100% malted barley
  • Cask: Ex-bourbon American oak casks give a balance of sweetness and spice, with a hint of vanilla
  • ABV: 45.8%, slightly higher than the standard 40%

The Process of Creation

The distillery also uses malted barley that is peated to a level of about 18-22 parts per million (ppm) of phenols (compounds that give peat its smoky aroma and taste). The peated barley is then mashed with hot water to extract the sugars and fermented with yeast to produce a beer-like liquid called wash.

The wash is then distilled twice in copper pot stills that have an unusual shape and size: a bulbous neck and a U-shaped bend called a lye pipe. The lye pipe allows some of the heavier vapours to condense and fall back into the still, creating a more intense and flavourful spirit. The spirit is then collected in oak barrels and aged for at least 10 years before being bottled.

The Eye, Nose, and Palate

The Appearance

Talisker 10 has a bright golden color that reflects its age and maturation in oak barrels. It has a medium body and viscosity, which means that it coats the glass well when swirled. It also forms thin legs that run down slowly when tilted.

The Nose

This whisky has a rich and complex nose that reveals different layers of aromas as you inhale. The first impression is of smoke and salt, reminiscent of a bonfire on the beach or a smoked fish. Then you can detect some fruity notes of citrus, apple, and pear, as well as some floral hints of heather and lavender. There are also some spicy tones of pepper, ginger, and cinnamon, as well as some sweet ones of vanilla, honey, and caramel.

The Palate

Talisker 10 has a full and powerful taste that matches its nose. The first sip delivers a burst of smoke and salt on the tongue, followed by a wave of sweetness and fruitiness. The second sip reveals more complexity and depth, with some spicy and peppery notes that add some heat and bite to the palate.

The Finish

It has a long and satisfying finish that lingers on the palate for minutes after swallowing with the same tones as the smell and taste. It leaves a warm and cozy feeling in the mouth and throat, as well as a pleasant aftertaste.

The Pricing

Talisker 10 Single Malt Whisky is priced at around $90 to $130 for a 700 ml bottle in Singapore, ~$94.95 from our store.
