Is is produced by the renowned estate Vega Sicilia in the Ribera del Duero region of Castilla y Leon, Spain, Valbuena 5º reflects a combination of rigorous viticulture and extended ageing. The “5º” in the name refers to the five years of ageing (oak + bottle) before release.
The 2019 vintage grew in vineyards planted at elevations between ~700-900 m, with low yields, healthy fruit and a focus on retaining freshness rather than over-ripeness.
In the cellar, the 2019 was treated with more gentle extraction, larger vats for elevage, and reduced use of American oak in favour of French oak with lighter toasts — all to emphasise elegance and finesse rather than sheer power.
