I used to consider the combination of beer and spirits blasphemy in my personal cocktail journey. Combining a spirit with a fizzy beer and calling it a cocktail felt lazy; limited beer options compounded my view of this. But as times changed, new beer profiles burst onto the scene, and I started taking beer seriously, trying out different combinations in classic cocktails, and discovering new ones at the same time. Beer and spirits is no longer an express ticket to getting smashed but a new and emerging cocktail trend.
So how do we marry the malty hops in a fizzy beer with the nuances of spirits? Many factors come into play, from the complexity and structure of the beer to the prominence of flavours. As a rule of thumb, we want to balance the flavour of the final product, either by complementing a core flavour or contrasting it. Let’s dive into a few varieties of beer and their bubbly characters!
Before embarking on our mixology adventure, let's identify which beers make the best partners for our cocktail capers. The cool thing is, you can get creative and mix any type of beer with spirits, but here are some popular options that never disappoint:
Our dependable lager is a neutral participant, bestowing a light, hoppy fizz to cocktails. It pairs beautifully with vodka, conjuring a delightful concoction you'll find irresistible. A little shout-out to the Snakebite, which is a half-and-half combination of Lager and Apple Cider. When a crisp lager meets the sweet and tart of apple cider, you can imagine how refreshing that is in sunny Singapore.
Got yourself an IPA in hand? Awesome choice! This bold, hoppy brew often flaunts herbal, citrus, or bitter notes. Pick spirits that match those bright characteristics – a herbal gin, blanco tequila or any well-structured wine. Fortified wines, with their sweet and body-enhancing properties, are my personal favourites to offset the bitterness of hops.
Get ready for some deep, complex flavours with stout beer! It offers an exquisite balance of sweetness and bitterness, occasionally punctuated with bursts of fruity notes. This beer pairs like a champ with rum, thanks to its sweet earthy notes, but also pairs well with other spirits.
Take the 'Black Velvet' for instance, a flawless fusion of stout and champagne, which results in a dark, silky cocktail bubbling with the complexity of champagne. This cocktail, which has stood the test of time, was originally crafted in 1861 in memory of Queen Victoria’s Prince consort, Prince Albert.
Psst! This is a great cocktail to make when you have unfinished bottles of champagne!
What do you get when you combine a neutral-tasting spirit with a crisp, refreshing lager? An overproofed lager! The neutral flavour profile of most vodkas like Skyy won’t interfere too much with the core flavours of the beer, leaving you with a delightful, boozy beer that won’t disappoint. Perfect for those moments when you say, “I’ll just have one beer”
Beer and whisky have been an enduring pair since the 15th century, thanks to their similar base ingredients. Matching or complementary flavours can make this pairing truly shine. For example, a light lager like Tiger beer pairs excellently with sweeter, fruity whiskies like Highland Park 18. A wheat beer like Blue Moon offers a complex profile with a smoky and citrus twist, making it a perfect match for a peated whisky, such as the Talisker 18. Lastly, a pilsner beer like Carlsberg has a cleaner flavour profile that balances out the spicy finish of a whisky like Ardbeg 10.
Rum has recently become a favourite of mine for beer cocktails. From the clean, earthy notes of Bacardi Bianco to the spicy hits of Captain Morgan, there’s really not much a rum can’t do to pair with any of the beer profiles we mentioned here. Adding Ron Zacapa 23 to a light lager, for example, can add an unexpected layer of complexity, and to a stout can further enhance its robust structure!
Beer cocktails are fun and full of possibilities, but we can't ignore the need for moderation. Liquors have a higher alcohol content (ABV) than beers, and the carbonation in beer can accelerate alcohol absorption. Therefore, it's essential to use an ABV calculator when mixing spirits and beers to prevent unintentional overconsumption. After all, a good cocktail experience should be enjoyable, not end in an unexpected hangover.
Drink responsibly, and remember, a well-measured cocktail is a better-tasting one.
After all that has been said and done, I can only say I'm floored by the possibilities of mixing spirits with beers. The flavour combinations are nearly endless if you have access to different ingredients.
