History

Don Julio González-Frausto was born in 1917 in the small town of Atotonilco El Alto in Mexico. At 17, he began working as a field hand on his family's agave farm and was drawn to the traditional tequila production methods.

In 1942, Julio founded his tequila distillery—La Primavera—committed to using only the finest agave and traditional production methods. He continued to refine his techniques, pioneering stainless steel fermentation tanks, which helped to improve the quality and consistency of his tequila.

The Process of Creation

The production of Don Julio 1942 anejo tequila begins with the hand-selection of Blue Weber agave from the estate's sustainably cultivated highland fields. At peak maturity, the distillery workers slowly extract the heart of the fruit—called the piña—and slowly steam it in traditional ovens to release its complex flavours.

After steaming, they crush the piñas using a rock wheel to extract the juices and fibres that will be fermented. The workers double-distil the fermented liquid known as mosto in copper pot stills and age it for at least two and a half years in hand-selected American oak barrels.

The spirit transforms into a complex extra añejo tequila during maturation, getting oak and caramel undertones while developing a smooth finish. Master blenders carefully monitor each barrel's progress throughout ageing to achieve the desired flavour.
